The Impact of Digital Technology on Photography
WEEK 12
How digital technology changed the role of photography in the society?
Digital technology has changed the role of photography in society in many ways. When photography first evolved, there was very little that can be done because the cameras were so big and only certain people could control them. Pictures were also very rare and significant back in the days when photograph was a new era to people. Photos that people took were kept in very sacred places. Today, they are taken on a daily basis by pretty much anyone. Almost every average family owns a camera, or even better, a digital camera. Students walk around with camera photos and capture pictures on the regular. Photography has changed and evolved drastically over the years.
With digital technology, photos can be edited to change the original photo into something completely different. Digital technology allows people to change the colour, contrast, and lighting of photos. We’re even capable of rotating, enlarging, adding and removing features, and minimizing faulty details on photos.
Because of digital photograph:
- Films for cameras are very rarely purchased by consumers these days
- The storage capacity for digital photos are enormous
- Adding text and graphics to enhance photos are easily manipulated
- Cameras offer different features to capture the perfect photo
- Photos can be printed easily by anyone
…and the list goes on.
Comparing the effects of photoshop on photos:
What has been the impact of digital photography on journalism?
The impact of digital photography in journalism has changed beyond the years. Some photographers are not capturing photos of a real event anymore, instead they are taking photos and changing them to way they wanted it to be portrayed. Photographers now work with their photos on computers using photo editing tools (ex. Photoshop) instead of in a chemical darkroom. Photojournalism is very rare in portraying every detail of what a camera captures because photographers tend to change the concept and the story telling of the event.
This page will display images from various sources and myself throughout the semester.
